High Tariffs Are Pro-Family

We can thank their thorough understanding of economics and its ripple effects on society for the fact that our nation’s Founding Fathers instituted tariffs as the cornerstone of federal revenue. Their goal was to build a robust nation on a strong foundation of stable families. They knew that so-called free trade is really just an economic version of open borders, ushering in societal suicide. 

History is replete with proofs that high tariffs, by strengthening the national economy and protecting jobs, ultimately foster strong families. One could imagine that was the point of political strategist James Carville’s pithy 1992 political campaign slogan, “It’s the economy, stupid!” 

He wasn’t the first to arrive at that conclusion, though others expressed their thoughts more tactfully. Nineteenth-century economist Friedrich List, an advocate of economic nationalism, argued that tariffs help nurture a country’s home-grown industry, freeing it from dependence on imports and protecting it from (often unreliable) foreign competitors.
