Government Liars
Do you trust the government? There was a time in our country’s history, within living memory of many, when a solid majority of Americans could sincerely answer “yes” to that question.
That, unfortunately, is no longer the case for most Americans. According to a 2024 Pew Research survey, only 21 percent of Americans polled said they trusted the U.S. government to do what is right “most of the time.” A mere two percent said they “almost always” trust the government to do what is right. Naturally, that level of trust is higher when a person’s preferred political party is in power, but it’s still universally well below 50 percent.
What happened? Several factors can be blamed. Government ineptitude is one. Salacious stories of politicians involved in scandals is another. The general impression that politicians waste time fighting “the other side” rather than “getting things done” is yet another.
