Standing Up for America

In today’s contentious political climate, one American’s patriot may be another’s scoundrel. President Donald Trump is a case in point. Many despise him to such an extent that they’ll angrily condemn whatever he says or does — just because he’s Trump. There is even a name for such irrational behavior: Trump Derangement Syndrome. On the other hand, others love Trump to such an extent that they’ll agree with everything he says or does — just because he’s Trump.

In fact, some even consider it their patriotic duty to support all of Trump’s policies, no matter what. After all, he is the president of the United States!

But that’s a mistake, since patriotism should not be defined as “supporting the president no matter what.” If that were the case, then what it means to be patriotic could radically shift as soon as there’s a new president in the White House.
