FBI Coverup Protects Biden, Stymies Congress
On Monday, June 15, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) delivered a bombshell: The unredacted version of a certain FBI FD-1023 form, which Grassley and House Oversight Committee chair James Comer (R-Ky.) have both seen, alleges that a Ukrainian executive of Burisma Corporation has recordings of conversations with both Hunter Biden and Joe Biden, in which their corrupt quid pro quo dealings were discussed. Grassley was specific: The Burisma exec possesses 15 recordings of phone calls with Hunter Biden, and two more recordings of phone calls with the “big guy” himself, then-Vice President Joe Biden. The unnamed executive supposedly made the recordings as “a sort of insurance policy, in case he got into a tight spot,” according to Grassley. Yet in the version of the FD-1023 that FBI Director Christopher Wray finally deigned to let House Oversight Committee members read last Friday, that information, along with large tracts of other incriminating text, had been redacted.
The following day, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), in a contentious back and forth with FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate, accused the FBI of stonewalling over the Biden corruption allegations. When Cruz asked Abbate, repeatedly and directly, whether the FBI possessed the tape recordings mentioned by Senator Grassley, the deputy director refused to answer, saying he would not “get into that.”
This latest episode in the protracted struggle between the House Oversight Committee and foot-dragging FBI officials has followed a familiar pattern: obstruct, deny, delay, and outright refuse to cooperate with congressional investigators — only to reluctantly half-comply when threatened with legal action (in this case, citation of FBI director Wray for contempt of Congress). While the furor over possible contempt proceedings has receded temporarily with Wray’s having permitted all committee members to view the document, the FBI has still not complied with the congressional subpoena; the document has not been handed over to Congress unredacted, and neither have additional FD-1023s referenced in footnotes in this document, of whose existence Comer and other House Oversight Committee members had been totally unaware.
