A Flat Tire, a Machete — and a Gun?
While many cases of armed self-defense involve a career criminal engaging in a premeditated crime, there are also “heat of the moment” situations in which people get so angry they engage in violent behavior that ends in a lethal shooting. One such incident occurred on November 2 in Hialeah, Florida.
NBC Miami reported that 36-year-old Michel Lope Montes de Oca had a flat tire and called a mobile tire-repair service. The mechanic for the company showed up and replaced the tire, but at some point, Montes de Oca learned that the replacement was not a brand-new tire and became enraged. Police investigators say Montes de Oca grabbed a machete and threatened the mechanic with bodily harm. The mechanic, in fear for his life, retrieved a loaded firearm and shot Montes de Oca, fatally wounding him. The mechanic called 911, and Hialeah police arrived to discover the deceased suspect’s body at the scene.
After authorities concluded their investigation, the Hialeah police said, “Based on the information obtained by Detectives, it was determined that this was a justified shooting in self-defense.”
