Exercising the Right
Two Against One
ABC Chicago reported on October 15 about the attempted armed robbery of an off-duty corrections officer. Police later explained that the 24-year-old off-duty officer was walking down the street late at night when an SUV pulled up and two armed men jumped out. The men demanded cash from the officer, who tried to flee. One of the armed robbers fired at the officer, who pulled out his own gun and fired back, hitting one of the suspects.
Chicago police later arrested 32-year-old Desmond White, who they believe is the suspect wounded in the shooting, and charged him with “attempted first-degree murder, attempted robbery while armed with a firearm and being an armed habitual criminal.”
Neighbors were disturbed by the incident. “I’m very surprised…. The neighborhood is very safe in terms of violent crime…. On this street is a hotel, as well as two wedding venues, some restaurants, the headquarters of Google,” West Loop resident Misse Daniel told WGNTV.com.
