Escaping a Cult
“Admitting you are wrong is never easy. Admitting you are wrong about everything is next to impossible,” writes Lisa Ekman in her new book Deprogramming Democrats & unEducating the Elites: How I Escaped the Progressive Cult. In it, she describes her spiritual and intellectual awakening to the reality of the looming tyranny built by the party she held in high regard and considered her own.
A refined intellectual boasting multiple advanced degrees from prestigious universities, Ekman had been a well-connected D.C. insider for 28 years, entrenched in progressive circles.
Her “deprogramming” began when a foray into healthcare-related topics, spurred by her mother’s battle with cancer, left her disturbed by the apparent contradiction between government expert advice and fundamental medical principles. This dissonance, she reflected, became the initial hairline fracture in the dam withholding the deluge of truth from her consciousness. Yet, despite the breach, the dam held firm.
