“Habemus papam” headlines burst to the fore on May 8, announcing the former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Catholicism’s 267th pope — the first from the United States. Conjectures about this long-shot candidate quickly followed: Who is the man now known as Pope Leo XIV, and what will his papacy be like?

His red-and-blue voting record in Illinois primaries reveals little. Social-media defenders highlight his pro-life record and his staunch opposition to women’s ordination to the priesthood, while naysayers repost his numerous tweets bearing left-leaning messages and criticizing Trump’s immigration policies. So, is he a liberal or a conservative? 

“He’s not going to be real far left, and he’s not going to be real far right,” his elder brother, John, predicted in an interview with The Associated Press. “Kind of right down the middle.” But he also said his brother will likely be a “second Pope Francis.”
