A Fong in the Henhouse
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” wrote philosopher George Santayana. Our nation is a tragic case in point. How else could Covid have surprised us? Why did we react with shocked umbrage to a stolen election? And why are so many Americans excited about yet another administrative agency — with the Orwellian title “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) — that promises not to shut down but to streamline the largely unconstitutional federal bureaucracy?
Scratching our heads over rising food prices is yet another example of our historical blind spot. The cover story in this issue proves that hunger games are a time-honored tactic of governments to enslave their own people by restricting resources and concocting famines.
“US Beef Herd Has Shrunk 40% Since 1975 to Smallest Size Since 1961” warns a recent International Business Times headline. The author blames the usual culprits — “severe droughts and rising costs” — but students of history realize this type of situation has little to do with natural phenomena or free-market forces. Bureaucracy’s iron fist is to blame.
