Former President Donald Trump field a defamation lawsuit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos after Stephanopoulos allegedly made false statements during a March 10 interview with Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.).
Stephanopoulos claimed Trump was found liable for rape in a defamation lawsuit filed by E. Jean Carroll in which the jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse, battery, and defamation, but determined it was not proven that Trump had raped Carroll according to New York law.
Stephanopoulos asked Mace, “I’m asking you a very simple question, explain why…. I’m asking you a question about why you endorse someone who’s been found liable for rape — just answer the question. It was a civil court that found him liable for rape.”
The court filing by Trump attorney Alejandro Brito alleges Stephanopoulos was aware of the jury’s verdict, having made previous statements acknowledging that Trump was not found liable for rape:
49. Of particular note, Stephanopoulos specifically asked Carroll “How about yesterday in the courtroom, the first, the first announcement was made, and it was that he was not found liable for rape. What were you thinking at that moment?” [Emphasis added.]
