As the GOP assembles in Tampa for the Republican National Convention, delegates have adopted a plank for the platform rejecting the imposition of United Nations taxes on Americans or UN control over the global monetary system, pointing out that the scandal-plagued global body has proven itself wasteful and incompetent. Activists celebrated the move, but some national GOP officials said it should have gone further, noting that the UN is absolutely determined to infringe on U.S. sovereignty.
According to the Washington Times, which first reported the story, some of the more extreme Democrats in Congress have actually supported proposals to impose special international taxes on Americans for redistribution to Third World governments — mostly dictatorships, of course. In the resolution, however, the RNC said it opposed “three global taxes and a global monetary governance mechanism to raise $400 billion a year to aid developing countries.”
As The New American has documented extensively, the UN — critics call it a “dictators club” due to the composition of its membership — continues to propose a wide assortment of global taxes. Everything from banking transaction taxes to “carbon taxes” on shipping or air-travel has been suggested in the organization’s reports and by its leaders. More recently, on multiple occasions, the planetary body even advanced the idea of erecting a global monetary system managed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to replace the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency.
“The United Nations has not evidenced its capability to properly handle foreign aid and has in face been shown to be wasteful and scandal-ridden,” the GOP resolution observes, citing calls by senior UN leaders to redistribute wealth from the West to dictators ruling poorer nations. The platform measure was approved by the Republican standing resolutions committee last week and is expected to be adopted at the upcoming RNC gathering.
The sponsor of the resolution, a founding member of the RNC Conservative Caucus, pointed out that the UN appears determined to violate U.S. sovereignty — apparently with help from the Obama administration. Despite fierce and growing American opposition, a terrible track record, and a lack of any legitimate authority, the global body’s power grabs have become increasingly bold in recent years, advocates of the proposed platform say.
Other supporters of the resolution expressed similar concerns but argued that the language should have been even stronger. “In truth, the UN has no authority to impose a tax on the citizens of the United States,” convention delegate Jeff Grossman told the Times, adding that he wished the measure “had gone further.” He also said the GOP had to take a firm stand because “it would be a violation of America’s sovereignty and of the Constitution to ratify such a tax.”
Beyond global taxes, according to the Times, the Republican move could complicate underhanded efforts by elements within the U.S. government to participate in international agreements such as the so-called “Law of the Sea Treaty” (LOST), which has never been ratified by the Senate as required in the Constitution. Future UN treaties adopted under the guise of fighting so-called “climate change,” formerly known as “global warming,” could also be hampered by the Republican resolution, the paper reported.
This is not the first time in recent memory when Republicans have taken a firm stance against UN scheming, however. Earlier this year, for example, the RNC adopted a resolution slamming the global body’s Agenda 21 so-called sustainability program as an extreme “socialist” and “communist” plot to redistribute wealth.
“The United Nations Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of extreme environmentalism, social engineering, and global political control,” the resolution explains, citing UN documents. “This United Nations Agenda 21 plan of radical so-called ‘sustainable development’ views the American way of life of private property ownership, single family homes, private car ownership and individual travel choices, and privately owned farms; all as destructive to the environment.”
Numerous state and local Republican parties adopted similar resolutions in the wake of the RNC’s bold action. But the fight against the UN and Agenda 21 is hardly a partisan issue. Consider that in recent months, countless Democrats in multiple state legislatures and local governments have joined their GOP colleagues to reject the global scheme, too. In Alabama, a law banning Agenda 21 passed unanimously in both houses of the legislature, meaning every Democrat lawmaker supported the legislation.
The latest RNC resolution against UN taxes also comes in the wake of recent televised statements made by Texas Judge Tom Head, a Republican. The official warned that if Obama were to be re-elected, the president may — in a worst case scenario — spark a civil war and try to transfer more U.S. sovereignty to the UN. But the American people, of course, would rise up to resist such treachery if the president decided to go forward, Head explained.
“Now what’s going to happen if we do that, if the public decides to do that? He’s going to send in U.N. troops. I don’t want ’em in Lubbock County, OK. So I’m going to stand in front of their armored personnel carrier and say ‘you’re not coming in here,’” Head promised, touting a tax increase to better fund local law enforcement. “And the Sheriff, I’ve already asked him, I said ‘you gonna back me,’ he said, ‘yeah, I’ll back you.’ Well, I don’t want a bunch of rookies back there. I want trained, equipped, seasoned veteran officers to back me.”
A spokesman for UN boss Ban Ki Moon dismissed the notion of invading Texas as “ridiculous,” adding that “no one, not even the United Nations, would ever mess with Texas.” However, fears about the UN and its extremist supporters in the U.S. government run deep, as evidenced by the reaction to Head’s comments by legions of conservative commentators across the Internet.
American criticism of the UN has been growing stronger in recent months as new scandals continue to embarrass the organization, too. Earlier this month, for example, it emerged that the mass-murdering terror regime of Omar al-Bashir ruling over Sudan was set to join assorted communist dictatorships and Islamist tyrants on the UN “Human Rights Council.” One month prior, U.S. lawmakers blasted the global body after it was caught sending sensitive U.S. technology to the regimes ruling Iran and North Korea.
Before that, of course, the UN had come under fire for allowing its so-called “peace keeping” troops to run wild around the world, with new accusations of sex-crimes and murder emerging on a regular basis. And just last month, the UN “Population Fund” came under renewed scrutiny by U.S. lawmakers for using American tax dollars to commit forced abortions in China — all in collaboration with the barbaric communist regime there.
While the scandals continue to grow, activists and even lawmakers are quickly becoming fed up. Some want to defund various UN committees and organs — especially the “Human Rights Council,” UNESCO, and the Population Fund, which the Obama administration restored funding to in recent years. Others hope the U.S. government will withdraw from the world body altogether, arguing that it is impossible to reform such a thoroughly corrupt and bloated institution.
Whether the latest moves by the GOP represent the start of a serious effort to rein in the UN or simply a ploy to garner votes remains unclear — the platform is non-binding. But critics of the world body celebrated the resolution nonetheless, saying it was past time for the nation to have a proper discussion about the U.S. government’s role in the UN, if there should even be one at all.
