Policies put in place long before the arrival of President Obama virtually assured the disruption and revolution in Iraq currently being viewed on every television channel in America. But back in 2011, the president assured the American people that all was well in the country, that America’s adventurism had succeeded, and that it was safe to leave it to manage its own affairs without further American interference.
That was then. Said the president:
Iraq’s future will be in the hands of the people. America’s war in Iraq will be over. Iraq is not a perfect place. It has many challenges ahead. But we’re leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq with a representative government that was elected by its people.
We’re building a new partnership between our nations and we are ending a war not with the final battle but with a final march toward home.
This is an extraordinary achievement.
This is now. Wrote Alex Newman in The New American in April:
The purpose of the war … remains as elusive as ever. The constitution of Iraq, imposed with Western assistance, has come under fire … [for] stating that “Islam is the official religion of the State.… No law that contradicts … Islam may be established.”
This is the Youtube video as Obama wished Iraq to be, not as it is:
