Activist and journalist Jeff Weinhaus spent years highlighting alleged abuses by law enforcement and the judiciary in his community before being repeatedly shot by police and then going to prison for assaulting a police officer, but there are some major questions about the case that deserve to be scrutinized, explained high-profile lawyer Warren Markowitz in an interview on Conversations That Matter with The New American magazine.
Markowitz, who tried to help Weinhaus on appeal, said video evidence convinced him that Weinhaus had not in fact done what police and prosecutors accused him of doing. His biggest problem was not shutting his mouth, irritating and intimidating powerful people, and refusing legal representation during trial. New evidence that came to light has now re-opened interest in the case, with the Midwest Innocence Project taking over from the Missouri Public Defender’s Office.
Markowitz ends the interview with some advice for people: If arrested, remain silent and request a lawyer; do not carry firearms when going to meetings with police, and make sure you have legal counsel if involved in high-stakes legal proceedings.
