In the run-up to the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette was reported to have been told that the peasants were starving and had no bread to eat, whereupon she said “Let them eat cake”. As Jean-Jacques Rousseau pointed out, this anecdote is apocryphal and was in fact attributed to a duchess a hundred years earlier. But this narrative is nevertheless effective because it’s illustrative of a ruling class indifferent to the suffering of the people. Do we have a ruling class now who exemplifies this apathy and hostility?
