Stacey Abrams, the election denier who has yet to concede her 2018 loss in the Georgia gubernatorial election, claimed in a recent interview that any criticism of so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, also known as DEI, is an attack on democracy itself. Abrams made the comments on a recent MSNBC interview with Al Sharpton.
Instead of looking at what’s wrong with DEI, Abrams expressed anger that the concept is being — in her words – attacked. And not only is democracy in jeopardy, but also education and even our economy, according to Abrams.
“What we know is that the attack on diversity, equity, and inclusion, DEI, is an attack on democracy, it is an attack on education, it is an attack on how our economy works,” Abrams said.
Abrams said that Georgia’s senators, Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, are somehow proof that the concept works.
“Senator Ossoff and Senator Warnock represent … pathways to the American dream, they are proof points and those proof points scare those who want this world to be more narrow and restrictive,” Abrams claimed.
The DEI comments came in a discussion about what Democrats must do to defeat Donald Trump in the coming general election.
“We should be terrified of the person who wants to come back into the White House, strip off us of our rights, rescind the economic progress we have made and undermine the democracy that we hold to be so dear,” Abrams said of Trump.
“We have to remember that built into every victory are the seeds of defeat and built into every defeat are the seeds of victory. We have seen victory, but we cannot rest on that victory and think that it is impermeable and impervious to harm,” said the Howard University professor.
In 2018, Abrams eventually acknowledged that her opponent, Republican Brian Kemp, would be Georgia’s next governor, but ultimately refused to concede because of what she called “voter suppression” in the state.
Abrams later stated that Kemp “won under the rules of the game at the time, but the game was rigged against the voters of Georgia.”
DEI has been under fire in recent months as the American public has slowly caught on to the fact that diversity solely for the sake of diversity might not be the best way to run a society. Several major corporations, including Tesla, DoorDash, Lyft, Home Depot, Wayfair, X, and even Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta have slashed DEI budgets and training in the past year.
Defending DEI is basically saying it’s ok to discriminate against certain people. The hiring of a less-deserving and less-qualified person simply because they check off an intersectional box is a lousy way to do business. The sooner all of America understands this, the better.
