Senate Democrats and others on the Left are ramping up their push to modify or completely abolish the filibuster.
As The New American earlier reported, the U.S. Senate will begin debate today on H.R. 5746, the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, a major federal election-takeover bill that combines previous pro-fraud legislation pushed by the far Left.
Senate Democrats have tied the bill to their push to change the filibuster, vowing to vote on changing or eliminating the filibuster if H.R. 5746 does not obtain the 60-vote threshold necessary to pass the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reiterated this plan Monday, stating in a speech that, “the only path forward on this important issue is to change the rules to bypass the filibuster.”
Senate Democrats are also looking at other options to pass radical election-takeover legislation. For example, some Democrats including Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) are considering using a strategy that will allow H.R. 5746 to pass with a simple majority without formally changing the filibuster. This would be accomplished by forcing Senate Republicans to exercise the filibuster only by physically speaking and using procedural motions. The Democratic Senate Caucus will meet Tuesday evening to discuss the filibuster.
Regardless of what strategy Senate Democrats choose to pursue, all but two support or are open to changing the filibuster or abolishing it altogether. They have an ally in Joe Biden, who endorsed changing the procedure in a speech on January 11.
It is no mystery why the Left wants to end the filibuster. Since Joe Biden assumed the presidency, his administration and congressional Democrats have attempted to enact multiple radical, far-left policies in their attempt to obtain total control over the nation. These include Washington, D.C., statehood, a mass amnesty of illegal aliens, the “Build Back Better Act,” multiple pro-fraud election bills, radical pro-union legislation, expanding the draft to women, implementing a UN gun control treaty, and much more.
However, for most of these destructive policies, the filibuster is the only thing blocking them. Its roots stretch back to 1789, and it has been the Senate’s practice since 1806, later being formalized in 1917. It has played an important role in making the Senate “the world’s greatest deliberative body.” Now, Biden’s handlers and congressional Democrats want to totally demolish this 230-plus-year history — along with everything else contrary to leftist values.
The anti-filibuster push is not a spontaneous effort. Earlier this month, the Capital Research Center reported that a major anti-filibuster advocacy group, Fix Our Senate, is actually a front for a $1.7 billion “dark money” operation led by the consulting firm Arabella Advisors.
The U.S. Senate would be wise to fully preserve the filibuster, which, as the dam holding back the Democrats’ radical Marxist agenda, is in greater danger than ever. Rather than trying to change the rules to ram their their personal agendas, senators should focus on upholding the U.S. Constitution and restoring the federal government’s adherence to it.
