President Joe Biden is in severe cognitive decline and his staff has shielded him from members of Congress for years.
And such is Biden’s impairment that his phone calls are scripted.
Those claims from GOP U.S. Senator Mike Lee of Utah, which he made in an interview with Tucker Carlson, aren’t news to anyone who’s closely watched Biden since even before he was elected.
But it helps explain why — after Biden’s disastrous debate with former President Trump on June 27 — top Democrats offered Biden an ultimatum: either quit his quest for reelection, or face removal from office under the 25th Amendment to the federal Constitution.
Indications of Mental Impairment
Lee didn’t use the word “dementia.” But he described multiple instances in which he saw that Biden was obviously and seriously cognitively impaired. Before describing them, he told Carlson why he knew. Leftist cartoonist Ted Rall wrote before Biden even received the Democratic nomination in 2020 that anyone who has a relative with dementia knows Biden has it. In his interview with Carlson, Lee noted of Biden:
I could tell just based on things that I saw from a distance. We lost my mother-in-law a few years ago to Alzheimer’s. She had had the disease for nearly a decade, and the doctors told us soon after she was diagnosed what sorts of things to watch for. And they said, you’ll know that it’s starting to get a lot worse when it starts to affect her posture, and particularly her gait. When she starts shuffling, kicking her feet forward, rather than walking in a fluid, smooth motion like she always has, you’ll know that things are progressing quickly and that that is an outward manifestation of what’s going on inside of her mind.
I saw that same gait and posture in President Biden during his first term in office. I don’t remember exactly when it was in 2021 that I noticed that, but it was sometime during his first year.
A neurologist recently told NBC News that Biden’s shuffling gait was due to Parkinson’s disease, and Lee conceded that Biden’s physical frailty might be attributable to something else.
But Lee “saw plenty of reasons” to believe Biden was declining cognitively. Aides “kept him shielded not only from the public and from non friendly press, but also from members of Congress.”
He said former presidents Trump and Obama frequently and enthusiastically interacted with congressmen and senators. Not so Biden, however. “They shielded him from us,” Lee said.
“Do You Work in the East Wing?”
Lee also described an occasion involving his wife’s interaction with Biden when she attended an event for Senate spouses hosted by first lady “Dr.” Jill Biden:
President Biden just kind of came wandering in. I think they were in one of the ballrooms. He kind of came wandering in, she said. There was no Secret Service with him, no staff with him, he just kind of walked in. She said, instinctively, I just said, “Oh, hello, Mr. President. It’s good to see you.” He asked her, “Do you work in the East Wing?”
And she said, “No, no, Mr. President, I’m Sharon, Sharon Lee, Senator Mike Lee’s wife.”
You know, he swore me into the Senate twice, first in 2011, then in 2017, just before he left the vice presidency. And we had interacted with him a lot, she thought that would take care of it. He looked confused, and moments later he said, “Do you work in the West Wing?”
“Biden’s Signature Move”
Shortly thereafter, Lee said, a Democratic spouse approached Biden with a cell phone, told the president her brother-in-law was a “big fan,” and asked if Biden would wish him a happy birthday.
“This is Biden’s signature move. He’s really, really good at this,” Lee explained, describing a similar call to GOP Senator Pat Toomey’s father:
But this woman handed him the phone. It rang. The woman’s brother-in-law answered, “Hello.” And then he got a confused look on his face, held out the phone, hung it up, and handed the phone back. Now that for Joe Biden is very significant.
Media Coverup
Lee said the “media” coverup of Biden’s mental impairment “stunned” him.
He said Republicans discuss Biden’s mental impairment frequently, and Democrats offer “nods” when discussing it with them:
Statements to the effect that, yeah, well, you know, there are good days and bad days, and then they try to move on as soon as possible. They don’t like to talk about it. I suppose I understand why they don’t want to talk about it, but it’s a thing that sometimes needs to be talked about.
Biden’s impairment requires aides to script his phone calls, Lee said. He was speaking with Biden on the phone in late 2021 or early 2022 and could tell the president was reading from a script.
In a conversation about expanding two national monuments in Utah, “I could tell he was reading from a script and not only reading from a script, but his voice would start to trail off at the end of each sentence,” Lee said.
Carlson noted that Biden’s sister, Val, told “other people” during the 2020 campaign that he was neurologically impaired.
As Rall wrote for Rasmussen Reports in 2020, “Democrats are conspiring to gaslight the American people by engineering the election of a man clearly suffering from dementia.”
“No one who has been close to someone deteriorating from that disease could fail to see the same signs in Joe Biden,” he wrote.
But so obsessed were Democrats with beating Trump they pushed Biden forward anyway.
Post Debate Coup
Yet, after Biden’s calamitous collapse in the debate against Trump, Democrats knew they couldn’t get away with it again. They knew Trump would defeat him in November. The American people would see that Biden is too old and feeble to be president for another four years.
After Biden dropped out of the race with an announcement written on personal stationery and posted to X, the New York Post revealed that Democrats forced him out. They told him they would invoke the 25th Amendment to declare him incapable of fulfilling his duties.
“Operatives at the very highest levels of the Democratic Party threatened President Biden with forcibly removing him from office unless he stepped down,” the Post reported.
The move was a “well-orchestrated “palace coup” that “had been in place for weeks”:
[B]ut stubborn Biden fought it every step of the way, a source close to the Biden family told The Post. …
The insider also made clear the anger, paranoia and frustration Biden displayed as the party elite circled around him and piled on the pressure.
Part of the “elaborate” strategy to remove Biden from the race … was allowing him to debate Republican candidate Donald Trump last month on live TV in Atlanta.
So the only way to remove Biden was to set him up for public humiliation, then threaten to destroy him.
