President Biden continues to slide lower with each new poll. That is true of polls asking voters about his handling of key issues, such as the economy, foreign affairs, domestic affairs, the border, and a slew of other responsibilities related to his job performance as president of the United States. But the results of a new poll may be at the bottom of Biden’s poor performance in all those other areas. A majority of voters polled said they had “doubts” about Biden’s mental ability.
With Biden’s declining mental acuity on regular display, even many of his former defenders in mainstream media seem to have grown weary of attempting to brush aside episodes demonstrating that decline.
For instance, in the past two weeks alone, RNC Research has tweeted several embarrassing episodes of Biden demonstrating his confusion about where he is and what he is supposed to be doing. These moments were captured on video by media, and any meager defense offered by media folks who previously worked feverishly to run interference for Biden have run the gamut from lackluster to nonexistent.
On April 18 — the Monday after Easter — Biden seemed to lose track of time and space and had to be guided back to his immediate task by someone dressed as a female Easter Bunny.
That was not the only time that day the bunny got Biden back on track. When he apparently went off script and began to comment on Afghanistan during the White House Easter Egg Roll, the female bunny stepped in between Biden and the crowd and waved her hands until he walked away.
Later that same day, Jill Biden was heard directing Biden to “wave, wave” to the crowd as he completed his remarks. Apparently, the bunny was busy elsewhere.
The next day, Biden appeared even more confused. When asked by a reporter, “Mr. President, what did you discuss with the Allies today about Ukraine?” he stared blankly for a moment and then answered, “New Hampshire.” When the reporter appeared taken aback, Biden seemed to shake the cobwebs loose and say, “I’m here to talk about New Hampshire.” He then turned away, looking utterly confused, and seemed to wander off. The bunny was not there to help.
That same day, one hour after White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki — under direction from her boss — said the White House “would advise all Americans to [wear masks on airplanes],” Biden told a reporter it is “up to them” whether or not they want to wear masks on planes. And — to put in the for-what-it’s-worth column, Biden’s HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra announced later that same day that the Biden administration will “likely” appeal the federal ruling striking down Biden’s airplane mask mandate. So, Psaki and Becerra are on the same page, and Biden can’t appear to keep up.
An hour and a half after he said it was “up to” individuals to decide about wearing masks on planes, he was asked whether his administration would appeal the court ruling that ended his mandate. His answer was, “I’ve not gotten any brief from my, the CDC, I don’t know — follow the science.”
Later still on that same day, Biden served up another word salad, saying, “Maine, New Hampshire, America have gone on the mend! They’re on the, they’re not on the mend any longer, they’re on the move — and we’re coming to, at our, at our challenges position of stren–.” It is almost certain he would have said “strength,” but the last word just trailed off as he appeared to lose his thought mid-sentence.
On Wednesday, April 20, Biden sat smiling in his confusion as his staff screamed at reporters to leave without asking Biden questions.
On Thursday, April 21, Biden let slip the dogs (or at least the words) of war, saying, “We’ll continue to provide Ukraine the forces that they need, the weapons they need, excuse me, the equipment they need, their forces need to defend their nation.” His administration has denied that American soldiers or weapons will play any role in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
On that same day, when asked about repealing Title 42 (which allows U.S. border officials to quickly expel migrants and asylum-seekers on public-health grounds), Biden became confused to the degree that his word-salad answer addressed his plans to appeal the recent court ruling against his mask mandate for airplanes. At no point did he seem to realize that Title 42 is not about airplanes and masks.
He also forgot which city hosted the COP26 climate-change extravaganza he had attended. In fact, he forgot the name of the meeting.
And while he was forgetting things he had recently done, he forgot which way he entered the stage by the time he finished delivering a speech. He wandered around the stage for a few seconds (appearing to look for the female Easter Bunny to show him the way) before shuffling off in the right direction.
While there are many more examples this writer could list, those 10 should suffice. They also bring us up to the day a new Harvard Caps/Harris poll was conducted on Biden’s mental state. That poll surveyed 1,966 registered voters between April 20 and April 21 (after a week of demonstrable dementia on the part of Joe Biden), and found several things that do not bode well for a Biden 2024 run.
Biden scored abysmally in every important area. According to the poll, “perceptions of the direction of the country remain bleak, with only one-third indicating we are on the right track.” And voters “hold similar views” about “the direction of the economy,” with “more than twice as many voters” saying their finances are “getting worse” compared to a year ago.
Overall, Biden is still hovering around a 40-percent approval rating. The same is true of the approval rating of his party.
In fact, Biden comes in behind Ted Cruz, Bernie Sanders, Mike Pence, and — this has to burn — Donald Trump on the question of most favorable political figures. In that list, Trump has the highest rating — 44 percent, compared to Biden’s 42 percent.
Inflation — which a majority of voters blame on Biden and his policies — comes in as the top issue for voters (33 percent), with the economy and jobs — also an albatross around Biden’s neck — as the second concern (28 percent). Next is the immigration crisis at 22 percent. The top three issues chosen by American voters are all things for which Biden is rightly taking the blame.
And while there is much more in the poll that should give Democrats cause for grave concern, perhaps the crux of the entire problem of the Biden administration is found in the fact that 53 percent said they have “doubts about his [mental] fitness,” and nearly two-thirds (62 percent) said he “is showing he is too old” to be president.
But Biden — oblivious as usual — reportedly told former President Obama that he is certainly running in 2024, since he is the only Democrat who can beat Donald Trump. But at the rate his mind is falling apart, 2024 is a long way off.
