In a closed-door ceremony at the White House on Monday, President Trump awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor — the Presidential Medal of Freedom — to Representative Devin Nunes (R-Calif.). Present were members of his family and a few others who worked closely with Nunes during his investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Following the statement, Nunes was deferential:
To be there with the team that actually did all the work … to actually receive the nation’s highest civilian honors … [that] doesn’t happen every day.
I’m obviously very proud of what our team accomplished. It wasn’t about me. I was the guy in charge. It took a team and it took a lot of hard work.
In a statement issued before the ceremony the White House said that Nunes and his team unearthed “the crime of the century,” the misconduct by the Obama administration during the 2016 presidential election.
Specifically, Nunes, while chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in 2017, and his team learned that the phony so-called Steele “dossier” compiled by an ex-British spy was funded by Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
The White House added:
[Nunes] learned that the Obama-Biden administration had issued [FISA] warrants [in order] to spy on [members of] President Trump’s campaign … unmask[ing] several innocent spying victims for political gain….
[Nunes’ investigation] led to the firing, demotion, or resignation of over a dozen FBI and DOJ employees.
[Nunes] also forced the disclosure of documents that proved that a corrupt senior FBI official pursued a vindictive persecution of General Michael Flynn — even after rank and file FBI agents found no evidence of wrongdoing.
Nunes paid a price for driving the investigation:
Congressman Nunes pursued the Russia Hoax at great personal risk and never stopped standing up for the truth. He had the fortitude to take on the media, the FBI, the Intelligence Community, the Democrat Party, foreign spies, and the full power of the Deep State. Devin paid a price for his courage.
The media smeared him and liberal activists opened a frivolous and unjustified ethics investigation, dragging his name through the mud for eight long months.
Two dozen members of his family received threatening phone calls — including his 98-year-old grandmother.
The White House statement concluded:
Congressman Devin Nunes is a public servant of unmatched talent, unassailable integrity, and unwavering resolve. He uncovered the greatest scandal in American history.
Nunes is far from finished. In September he published the short book Countdown to Socialism, available on Amazon. Just 96 pages long, the book exposes the deep corruption of the Democratic Party that threatens the American Republic with its far-left political, economic, social, cultural, and anti-God agenda.
In chapter one, “Outside the Swamp,” Nunes wrote:
The Left has wholly rejected the fundamental principles that bound Americans together and allowed us to work out our differences democratically and peacefully. They now reject free speech, a fair voting system, private property, and the rule of law. They don’t dare yet admit it publicly, but as you’ll see in this book, their policies and rhetoric are incompatible with any of these principles as we understand them today.
The Left and its propaganda arm, the mainstream media, have been manipulating public opinion for years, said Nunes. His team’s investigation was just the tip of the iceberg. Nunes told Elise Cooper of American Thinker that his investigation “should have been going on for years … [for example] the FBI had the information [on Hunter and Joe Biden] and did nothing; it was a cover-up. At the time President Trump was being impeached for collusion, it was actually something Joe Biden actually did. The FBI was sitting on smoking gun after smoking gun after smoking gun.”
In chapter four, “The Disinformation Funnel,” Nunes names Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram as part of that transmission network, calling them “the Left’s message distribution centers.”
He added:
The media … is 95% controlled by the Left, including traditional independent sites [such as Fox] that are center-left at best….
The three big companies — Google, Facebook and Twitter — are manipulating what you see, and cutting off access to what you see.
They’re censoring conservatives and promoting left-wing content. They’re blatant about it.…
On Facebook and YouTube they can outright ban you, make you unsearchable, or take away your advertising revenue, just to name a few.
If somehow the Trump legal team is unable to keep Biden from taking office as president, Nunes warns:
When the Democrats say they’re going to transform America, we should take them at their word. That’s how high the stakes are. We’re fighting for our home, our country.
Nunes was happy to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. But that’s all ancient history. The heavy lifting lies in front of him, and in front of those involved in the freedom fight.
