In a pre-recorded speech to the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, President Trump said, “We must hold accountable the nation which unleashed this [coronavirus] plague onto the world: China.”
Trump noted that during the earliest days of the COVID virus occurring in China, the communist nation took an inconsistent approach to containing it — locking down travel domestically “while allowing flights to leave China and infect the world.”
Trump stated, “China condemned my travel ban on their country, even as they cancelled domestic flights and locked citizens in their homes.”
Continuing, Trump said,
The Chinese government and the World Health Organization — which is virtually controlled by China — falsely declared that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission. Later, they falsely said people without symptoms would not spread the disease.
The United Nations must hold China accountable for their actions.
In addition to criticizing China’s role in unleashing the coronavirus on the world, Trump also took aim at the globalist mentality that dominates the UN, saying,
For decades, the same tired voices proposed the same failed solutions, pursuing global ambitions at the expense of their own people. But only when you take care of your own citizens will you find a true basis for cooperation. As President, I have rejected the failed approaches of the past, and I am proudly putting America first, just as you should be putting your countries first. That’s okay — that’s what you should be doing.
In another statement, Trump said, “If the United Nations is to be an effective organization, it must focus on the real problems of the world. This includes terrorism, the oppression of women, forced labor, drug trafficking, human and sex trafficking, religious persecution, and the ethnic cleansing of religious minorities.”
While Trump’s defense of putting America first deserves praise, he fell far short of what is really needed to safeguard America’s interests from the rampant internationalism that the UN was created to promote over the entire world.
While all of the problems that Trump cited are real, they are all national problems that should be solved by each nation, in whatever manner best serves their national interests. For the UN to be “effective” in dealing with any of these problems, it must possess supranational powers that usurp the national sovereignty of the member nations — which is a greater problem than any of the others the UN might purport to solve.
As The New American noted in April, exposing the UN’s WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as a mouthpiece for the Communist Party of China, noted that defunding or shutting down WHO “would be a step in the right direction. But it would not neutralize the broader threat that the UN poses to American liberty, sovereignty, and self-government.”
The real solution, we explained, is to pass the American Sovereignty Restoration Act, which would end all U.S. government involvement in the UN.
