In yet another sign that Democrats want to flood the country with illegal aliens in the hope they’ll become Democratic voters, the California Senate approved a measure to bribe them — brazenly.
Yesterday, the Senate passed a bill that would permit illegals to apply for a program that would hand them $150,000, no strings attached, to buy a home.
And amusingly — or perhaps disturbingly — enough, the program through which the illegals would apply is flat broke. It has no money to hand out.
Have a Free House
AB 1840 is another one of those “money-is-no-object-even-if-the-state-is-bankrupt” bill that Democrats love. It not only fleeces the taxpayers, but also offers a hefty payola to illegals, possible future voters for even more socialism.
It might even be called the “Illegal Aliens Are Free to Colonize the Nation and We’ll Pay for It Act.” According to the bill’s language:
An applicant who meets the requirements for a loan under the home purchase assistance program, including, but not limited to, any requirements imposed on the agency in administering the program by the Federal National Mortgage Association, a government-sponsored enterprise, a loan servicer, an investor, or a guarantor, and who is otherwise eligible under applicable federal and state law, shall not be disqualified by the agency solely based on the applicant’s immigration status.
The bill passed 23-11, with three Democrats and all Republicans voting against it.
One big problem: The state is broke. The program has zero pesos with which to bribe the illegals.
“The California Dream for All Program in June awarded 1,700 first-time homebuyers with financial assistance of up to 20% of a home’s value for down payment and closing cost help,” KCRA3 in Sacramento reported:
But the program ran out of funds within its first 11 days this year, an issue that was at the center of Tuesday’s debate on the Senate floor.
Facing a budget shortfall in the tens of billions, the legislature and governor did not appropriate any funds for the program this year. In order to replenish the funds in future years, lawmakers and the governor will need to approve new money for it in future budgets.
As with so many Democratic policies, this one has a major bug — or feature, as the case might be.
The $150,000 loan requires no down payment — and “no payments,” The Center Square reported on August 27. The lucky illegals won’t pay a dime:
In exchange, the state receives the original loan amount plus 20% of the appreciated gain when the home is refinanced, sold, or transferred.…
It’s not clear what happens if a family decides to hold on to a home as there are no provisions on how long a property can be held for, which means certain kinds of trusts could potentially allow the loan to not be paid back. Democrats argued those applying for the funds have to work to qualify for mortgages and are thus paying taxes, while Republicans argued the program, which ran out of funds in 11 days, is already overcrowded.
In other words, though the state will supposedly reap the benefit when the illegal alien sells his home, the program puts no limit on how long an illegal or his offspring can own it. On the hook for the bill: California taxpayers.
The bill now heads back to the state’s House of Representatives.
No More Money
As KCRA noted, the state cannot fund the program. One reason: The state faces serious fiscal troubles.
The state’s Legislative Analyst’s Office projects a fiscal 2024-2025 budget deficit of almost $70 billion, a figure that will grow to some $150 billion in the next few years.
“In addition to the $68 billion budget problem we have identified for 2024‑25, the state faces annual operating deficits of around $30 billion per year,” the office reported in December:
These operating deficits represent additional budget problems the Legislature would need to address in the coming years, either by reducing spending, increasing revenues, shifting costs, or using reserves. Although highly uncertain, our projection of the state’s deficits would accumulate to $155 billion across the forecast window, which is significantly more than the amount of reserves the state has available (about $24 billion)
So, of course, one solution to that problem is buying homes for illegal aliens.
The People We Care About Most
As expected, critics noted the obvious: an American might lose his home, while an illegal gets a free one — courtesy of the taxpayer.
X user George (@BehizyTweets) posted the story of a 96-year-old woman who received an eviction notice from a senior-living facility because she supposedly owes $100,000 in back rent. But she paid more than $200,000 to the facility’s previous owner to live there until her death.
“But wait … her State Rep. Robert Rivas voted in favor of the plan to give illegal migrants $150,000 for a down payment on any house they want,” George wrote. “Democrats HATE Americans! … Instead of taking care of our seniors, Democrats are fixated on giving freebies to illegal criminals.”
The Marjorie Taylor Greene Press Release (Parody) account asked this question: “How many times do Democrats have to show you they care more about illegals than you?”
The giveaway does, indeed, demonstrate Democratic priorities not only in California, but nationwide.
In February, on leftist MSNBC, Democrat U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut said that illegal aliens are “the people we care about most.”
