Obama Pentagon Flogs Discredited Climate Fears — Again

The Obama Defense Department is at it again, ratcheting up the global warming fear index in preparation for the big UN climate summits in New York (September) and Paris (December).

Last year Obama’s Defense Department issued an embarrassing report on the alleged national security risks posed by global warming, replete with hysterical claims that read as if they had been written by Al Gore. The report was filled with glaring errors and wild statements that had been drawn from the administration’s 2014 National Climate Assessment (NCA), a climate doomsday study that had already been thoroughly discredited by eminent scientists armed with facts.

The Department of Defense released its latest alarmist salvo on the supposed dangers of anthropogenic (human-caused) global warming, or AGW, on Wednesday. Entitled National Security Implications of Climate-Related Risks and a Changing Climate, the 14-page report warns that “climate change is an urgent and growing threat to our national security.” Naturally, it was given abundant favorable  coverage by the same establisment media choir that have been dutifully parroting every climate apocalypse prediction for the past 20-plus years. According to this most recent DOD warning, man’s burning of carbon-based fuels is “contributing to increased natural disasters, refugee flows, and conflicts over basic resources such as food and water.” “These impacts,” it declares, “are already occurring, and the scope, scale, and intensity of these impacts are projected to increase over time.”

Projected to increase? Projected by whom? By the same discredited alarmist choir of climate computer modelers whose dire predictions have never failed to fail? (See here and here.) “Global climate change,” says the Pentagon-issued report, “will have wide-ranging implications for U.S. national security interests over the foreseeable future because it will aggravate existing problems — such as poverty, social tensions, environmental degradation, ineffectual leadership, and weak political institutions — that threaten domestic stability in a number of countries.”

The report also projects, “More frequent and/or more severe extreme weather events that may require substantial involvement of DoD units, personnel, and assets in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.”

However, the scientific claims of this politically driven report dressed up in national security camouflage is at odds with even some of the most ardent and vociferous voices in the AGW alarmist choir, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the BBC, and the Weather Channel. Concerning, for example, the much-hyped claim that, due to AGW, “extreme weather events” (particularly tornadoes and hurricanes) are now occurring with greater frequency and severity, meteorologist Anthony Watts wrote in March of this year:

For The First Time Since 1969, No US Tornadoes Reported In March.

The US tornado count for March 2015? Zero. That’s right, so far this month there have been no tornadoes reported in the U.S. — this is only the second time this has happened since 1950, according to Weather Channel meteorologist Greg Forbes.

“We are in uncharted territory with respect to lack of severe weather,” Greg Carbin, a meteorologist at NOAA, said in a statement. “This has never happened in the record of [Storm Prediction Center] watches dating back to 1970.”

“The global Accumulated Cyclone Energy shows no trend, since satellite monitoring began in the 1970’s, and the frequency of major hurricanes is not increasing,” notes Watts. “Even the IPCC admits there is no evidence that intense cyclones have been increasing.”

(Links to numerous additional studies showing there is no upward trend for severe or extreme weather -— droughts, floods, storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, etc. -— can be accessed here.)

In his May 20 address to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, President Obama also stressed the supposed dangers of global warming and suggested that the alleged high number of generals and admirals who are concerned about AGW is a good indicator that the national security risk is real. However, the fact that a relatively few members of the military brass publicly climb on the global warming bandwagon — whether out of ignorance, political expediency, or for personal gain — really doesn’t alter the facts of science.

The website ClimateDepot.com has assembled an impressive collection of scientific studies, data, and history to refute the claims of the Pentagon report. (Click here.)

As the clock ticks down to the coming UN climate conferences, we can expect that the predictions of climate apocalypse will become even more frequent, more dire, and more shrill. The advocates of total government are, after all, demanding trillions of dollars to fight this global menace. It takes a lot of fear to make people willing to accept the premise that government must take all of their money and all of their freedoms — for their own safety and security.

However, one of the inconvenient truths that is wreaking havoc with this fear campaign — and one we cannot restate too often — is that even many of the top AGW propagandists admit that there has been no measurable global warming for more than eighteen-and-one-half years.

That, at a minimum, calls into question the Obama Pentagon’s claim that “climate change is an urgent and growing threat to our national security.” Even more to the point, it blows to smithereens the argument that the “risk” from global warming is so great and so imminent that we must rush like lemmings to embrace what amounts to global dictatorship.
