While the climate change doomsayers constantly harp about global warming, climate blogger Tony Heller reported on November 13 that over the last eight months, global temperatures over land have cooled a record 1.2°C. Heller’s findings were charted on a graph posted on the website realclimatescience.com.
A biographical sketch on the International Conferences on Climate Change website created by the Heartland Institute notes that Heller “has spent much of the past seven years studying the history of extreme weather, as well as the history and methodology behind the reported NOAA/NASA temperature record.” He was one of the speakers at the ninth International Conference on Climate Change held on July 9, 2014 in Las Vegas, delivering a talk titled “The Emperor’s New Climate.”
While this latest report may come as a surprise to many people, longtime readers of The New American will not be among them. Our publication has published numerous reports over the past several years offering evidence that not only are periods of global warming more likely to be the result of natural cyclical changes than human activity, but that the warming process has reversed itself and our Earth may actually have entered a cooling period.
In one such article, published in 2013, Alex Newman observed:
So-called global-warming alarmists are in a frenzy after the latest climate data confirmed the Earth actually appears to be entering a potential cooling trend, sea-ice cover in Antarctica is growing to record levels, tornadoes and hurricanes are at record lows, and more.
The article pointed to information from the U.K. Met Office and various U.S. agencies indicating that global warming stopped more than a decade and a half ago, and cited a report in The New American the previous year. That previous 2012 report noted that the United Kingdom’s National Weather Service, known as the Met Office, had quietly released a report during the previous week conceding that so-called “global warming” had actually stopped more than 15 years previously.
Newman also cited an article published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, on August 7, 2013 about the lack of warming over the last 15 years. The article quoted from experts who suggested that the Earth may actually be entering another “little ice age.”
Similar reports have appeared in the news media around the world. A November 8 article in Britain’s Daily Express newspaper cited the findings of team of experts who have warned that huge seismic events, including volcanic eruptions, plunging global temperatures and destabilization of the Earth’s crust will become more common as a result of changes to the surface of the Sun.
The report predicted that it could take up to 15 years for solar activity to return to normal. Until that time, we might expect extreme weather and freezing temperatures that will continue until 2035.
The “seismic events” referred are a decline in the number of sun spots. The Daily Express noted:
The trend has prompted scientists to warn that the world is hurtling towards a historic solar minimum event with output potentially dropping to an all-time low.
The phenomena are thought to drive extreme cold weather in Europe, including Britain, Northern America and across the lower southern hemisphere affecting New Zealand and parts of South America.
The article noted that the frequency of sunspots is expected to rapidly decline over the next four years reaching a minimum between the years 2019 and 2020. It cited a warning from solar expert Piers Corbyn of the British forecasting group WeatherAction, who said the Earth faces another mini ice age with potentially devastating consequences.
According to Corbyn
We are now in a decline of solar activity and are on course for a very quiet period.
This can cause a shift in the jet stream making it move further south and as a result it turns very cold in temperate latitudes including Europe, Britain and North America.
We are anticipating temperatures to drop leading to ocean water freezing and ice drifts washing up around the coasts in Europe — we expect the next mini ice age.
The Daily Express also quoted solar physicist David Hathaway, of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Centre, who said: “The solar minimum is coming, and it’s coming sooner than we expected.”
In the past, some die-hard defenders of the theory that human activity has caused global warming have refused to change their position even during periods of colder-than-normal weather, sometimes asserting that the colder temperatures were a temporary result of global warming! It remains to be seen just how cold the Earth will have to become before such people change their mind and give global-warming alarmism the cold shoulder.
