Detectives in Travis County, Texas, are looking for the mother of an infant found dead in a shallow grave. A fisherman discovered the child, and now police are trying to find out how the baby died and whether the mother is safe.
Sad as the story is, nothing about it is unusual. When someone finds a corpse, cops investigate.
But news that they were seeking the mother sent an obscure feminist activist and “journalist” into a Twitter rage.
The cops are trying to “criminalize pregnancy,” Andrea Grimes wrote in the bizarre rant, alleging they really want to prosecute the mother.
Grimes, apparently, is uninterested in whether the mother or anyone else murdered the baby and hopes the cops will mind their business.
Case Details
Investigating dead bodies found in graves is the cops’ business, of course. Detectives want the public’s help to find the newborn’s mother to ensure she isn’t in danger, KVUE in Austin reported.
“Officials estimate the body, which was not clothed but was enclosed in plastic, had been there several days, perhaps a week,” the ABC affiliate reported. The grave was dug by hand:
An autopsy was conducted on Aug. 25, the final results of which are pending. The plastic the infant was found enclosed in will be sent to the FBI for further investigation.
“The baby wasn’t buried. She was discarded, thrown away,” Homicide Sgt. Sylvia Leal said on Sept. 7. “The body was left in the woods, lying in a very shallow depression. It’s a miracle she was found so soon after being left. I believe we are meant to find the answers she deserves.”
Detectives named the baby Ivy and said, “the evidence collected leaves room for many possibilities as to what may have happened,” KVUE reported. They also noted that the autopsy has not revealed whether the baby was born alive.
Detectives believe the mother might be a transient because homeless camps are nearby.
[I]t’s also possible this was a case of abuse, covered up by someone involved. We’re concerned for the mother’s safety and are trying to find her,” a detective told the station.
Authorities have spoken to, and obtained DNA from, two women that witnesses said were in late-term pregnancy. Both denied being Ivy’s mother.
Butt Out, Cops
So far, it’s all routine police business. Someone found a dead newborn. Detectives are looking for the mother.
But then angry feminism reared its ugly head.
“[C]ops have no f**king business in whatever is going on here — this is pregnancy criminalization in action,” Grimes fumed:
There are a whole bunch of reasons why someone may have lost a pregnancy or experienced stillbirth and zero of them need to involve the police, who are absolutely not here to just find out a few details they are trying to make an arrest, or bring some charges.
Why Grimes assumes the baby was stillborn or the pregnancy was “lost” she doesn’t explain. Maybe a kidnapper stole the baby from the mother and dumped it.
Grimes isn’t interested in finding out:
Criminalizing pregnancy — which is what happens when cops are the ‘officials’ running this situation — does not improve public health or make reproductive care safer.
This story will make the next person who needs help (rightly) afraid to seek it. …
You can absolutely f**king guarantee that the goal here is not to “make sure this mom is safe.” It is to bring charges, make an arrest, and carry out a prosecution.
If it were about making sure the pregnant person was safe, the sheriff wouldn’t be running this show. …
Grimes closed her rant with this kind note: “[C]ops are the fucking worst.”
Hate Babies, Legalized Infanticide
Grimes’s tirade suggests that she’s less concerned about “criminalizing pregnancy” — whatever that means — than in protecting the mother from a murder charge if she killed the baby and dumped the body.
The sentiment is in keeping with the argument to legalize infanticide. A decade or so ago, two “philosophers” argued that murdering a newborn should be called “after-birth abortion.”
[W]e propose to call this practice ‘after-birth abortion’, rather than ‘infanticide’, to emphasise that the moral status of the individual killed is comparable with that of a fetus (on which ‘abortions’ in the traditional sense are performed) rather than to that of a child,” the pair wrote:
Therefore, we claim that killing a newborn could be ethically permissible in all the circumstances where abortion would be. Such circumstances include cases where the newborn has the potential to have an (at least) acceptable life, but the well-being of the family is at risk. Accordingly, a second terminological specification is that we call such a practice ‘after-birth abortion’ rather than ‘euthanasia’ because the best interest of the one who dies is not necessarily the primary criterion for the choice, contrary to what happens in the case of euthanasia.
The authors did not say how old a child must be before “after-birth abortion” becomes premeditated murder.
Feminists are increasingly honest about their hostility to children.
“Babies are still time-sucking monsters with their constant neediness,” Salon scribe Amanda Marcotte opines. “This is why, if my birth control fails, I am totally having an abortion. Given the choice between living my life how I please and having my body within my control and the fate of a lentil-sized, brainless embryo that has half a chance of dying on its own anyway, I choose me.”
