The Watchdogs — and the Lapdogs

The pen, it is said, is mightier than the sword. This is particularly the case when the pen is used to spread truth rather than falsehood, since the former is far more powerful a weapon than the latter.

This is also why a free press is so vitally important for preserving freedom. So long as the press is free, the truth can get out, and government corruption and overreach can be exposed and checked. Because of this important role, the press has often been referred to as “the Fourth Estate,” a term that has been attributed to Edmund Burke, who reportedly said there were “three Estates” in the British Parliament, but “in the Reporters’ Gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important far than they all.”

More powerful than the three branches of government? Wow!
