Former President Donald Trump won the Iowa Caucus last night with 51 percent of the vote, followed by Ron DeSantis at 21.2 percent. Nikki Haley received 19.1 percent, and won in Johnson county. Trump would have swept all 99 counties in Iowa, but a single vote gave Johnson county to Haley — 1,271 to Trump’s 1,270. Iowa has same-day party registration for voters, and Democrats allegedly switched their party registration to vote for Haley.
No candidate has ever won a contested Iowa Caucus by such a wide margin at nearly 30 percentage points. The previous record was Bob Dole in 1988, who won by nearly 13 percentage points.
After the Associated Press called the race for Trump at 7:30 p.m., DeSantis spokesman Andrew Romeo said, “The media is in the tank for Trump and this is the most egregious example yet,” attacking the media and claiming election interference.
During his victory speech, Trump called on voters to come together, saying, “We want to come together, whether it’s Republican or Democrat or liberal or conservative. It would be so nice if we could come together and straighten out the world and straighten out the problems and straighten out all of the death and destruction that we’re witnessing that’s practically never been like this. It’s just so important.”
