Couy Griffin, a former county commissioner in New Mexico’s Otero County, had his appeal rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court earlier today. Griffin was disqualified from state and local office by a New Mexico district court due to a federal conviction where he served a 14-day prison sentence for entering a restricted area on January 6, 2021.
The Supreme Court stated in the Trump v. Anderson opinion earlier this month, “This case raises the question whether the States, in addition to Congress, may also enforce Section 3. We conclude that States may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But States have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency.”
Griffin responded to his appeal being denied, stating on X, “I just found out (through the media) that my appeal to the SCOTUS has been denied. Very disappointed. I don’t even know what to say. But I thank you for your prayers and for standing with me through this. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸”
