Following news of former Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) withdrawing from the nomination for attorney general, Donald Trump announced that Pam Bondi, former attorney general of Florida, will serve as U.S. attorney general in his second administration. As stated in a Trump-Vance transition press release:
I am proud to announce former Attorney General of the Great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next Attorney General of the United States. Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families. Then, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs, and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl Overdose Deaths, which have destroyed many families across our Country. She did such an incredible job, that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first Term — We saved many lives!
For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans — Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!
Gaetz supports Trump’s nomination, and noted his experience working with Bondi in Florida, stating in a post on X:
@PamBondi is a stellar selection by President Trump for Attorney General. Pam and I worked closely together when she was Florida’s Attorney General and I chaired Criminal Justice in the state house. She’s a proven litigator, an inspiring leader and a champion for all Americans. She will bring the needed reforms to DOJ.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) approved of Trump’s decision, and affirmed Bondi will be quickly confirmed, stating in a post on X:
Well done, Mr. President. Picking Pam Bondi for Attorney General is a grand slam, touchdown, hole in one, ace, hat trick, slam dunk, Olympic gold medal pick.
She will be confirmed quickly because she deserves to be confirmed quickly.
The Trump campaign X account, Trump War Room, posted remarks by CNN Legal Analyst Elie Honig where he stated Trump’s pick is “on par with, or better than” most previous attorney generals, posting on X:
