Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted a U.S. ceasefire proposal in Lebanon, with Israel’s Security Cabinet approving the deal in a 10-1 vote. In the speech earlier today, Netanyahu announced the ceasefire agreement, and stated the length of the ceasefire is dependent on Lebanon’s actions:
Therefore, this evening I will bring a ceasefire outline for the cabinet’s approval. The length of the ceasefire depends on what happens in Lebanon. With the United States’ full understanding, we maintain full freedom of military action.
The Prime Minister of Israel X account announced the Security Cabinet vote, stating in a post on X:
Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir stated the ceasefire agreement is a mistake, and will not deter Hezbollah, posting on X:
The cabinet’s decision tonight is a serious mistake. A ceasefire at this stage will not return the residents of the north to their homes, will not deter Hezbollah and in fact will miss a historic opportunity to strike them hard and bring them to their knees.
President Joe Biden responded to the ceasefire approval, announcing Israel agreeing to the U.S. ceasefire proposal, stating in a post on X:
Today, I have good news to report from the Middle East. I have spoken to the Prime Ministers of Lebanon and Israel. And I am pleased to announce: They have accepted the United States’ proposal to end the devastating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
