Shortly before traveling to the United States yesterday for a two-day visit, Argentina’s President-elect Javier Milei posted on X, “Rumbo a los Estados Unidos…!!! VIVA LA LIBERTAD CARAJO.”
Milei will arrive in New York and attend a religious ceremony, according to Reuters, and his delegation will travel to Washington later in the day to meet with officials from the U.S. Treasury, the White House, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to a Milei spokesperson. Milei spoke with IMF director Kristalina Georgieva last week to discuss Argentina’s $44 billion debt to the IMF. A spokesperson told AFP that Milei will hold “protocol meetings to explain the economic plan: fiscal adjustment, monetary reform, state reform and deregulation.” Last week, Milei stated that shutting down Argentina’s central bank is “non-negotiable” in response to the economic crisis in Argentina.
