A possible vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) was detonated at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing in New York. Fox News is reporting that, according to sources, the explosion was a terrorist attack. Two people in the vehicle are dead, and one border officer was injured with minor cuts. All border crossings in western New York were closed following the explosion.

The FBI released a statement on X: “The FBI Buffalo Field Office is investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the US and Canada in Niagara Falls. The FBI is coordinating with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation. As this situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say at this time.”

The possible VBIED explosion comes less than a day after CBS News senior investigative correspondent Catherine Herridge reported on a terror bulletin warning that New York could be targeted by terrorists motivated by the conflict in Israel. The bulletin stated, “The increase in civilian casualties raises the likelihood that violent extremist threat actors will seek to conduct attacks against targets in the West, with New York State being a focus,” with possible targets including “protests and other public events.”
