China: Panama Canal-BlackRock-CCP-Li Ka-shing

In case there was any doubt about Communist China’s de facto control of the Panama Canal, it has been dispelled by Beijing’s actions in the wake of the sale of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison’s Panama port facilities to BlackRock. Furious at the setback, Beijing is now punishing Hong Kong nonagenarian billionaire Li Ka-shing for allowing the sale, blocking the deal from going forward, and forbidding companies on the Mainland from transacting further business with Li’s company. One Hong Kong newspaper and kept asset of the CCP, Ta Kung Pao, railed against the CK Hutchison-BlackRock deal, characterizing it as “a spineless kneeling, profit-seeking and unrighteous act, ignoring national interests and national justice, and betraying and selling out all Chinese people.” Ah, yes. Please tell us again how all Trump’s claims of Chinese control over the canal are wildly exaggerated, since Hong Kong is not the CCP, the CK Hutchison facilities do not amount to control, etc. Its hand forced, the Chinese Communist Party has dropped all pretext of disinterest and is going all out to reverse the sale, a move that, if successful, will probably leave the United States with no option other than to reassert control over the canal militarily.

China Readying Attack on Taiwan

To underscore its intent, China this week launched a surprise new round of aggressive military exercises around Taiwan. The Taiwanese government detected at least 71 military aircraft, a carrier group, and 13 additional PLA navy vessels in the waters around Taiwan, practicing for what appears to be a military blockade of the free island. Possibly emboldened by the Trump administration’s ambiguous behavior with regard to the Russia-Ukraine war, China appears to be gearing up at long last to call America’s bluff on the Taiwan question, and consummate the long-planned Communist conquest of Free China. — SB
