The NAACP is threatening to sue a black pro-life leader for supposed trademark infringement after he referred to the civil rights group as the “National Association for the Abortion of Colored People.” In January Ryan Bomberger, founder of the pro-life Radiance Foundation, published a commentary on LifeNews.com in which he used the creative alternative for the NAACP acronym, pointing out that the nation’s premier civil rights group has been a staunch defender of abortion giant Planned Parenthood, despite the painful fact that abortion is decimating the black population, which now terminates over 50 percent of its viable pregnancies through the murderous procedure.
“The NAACP would rather sleep with Planned Parenthood, the urban staple and instigator of sexual irresponsibility, regardless of what people say,” wrote Bomberger. “The affair has been going on for decades. The NAACP, despite denials, has publicly supported Planned Parenthood numerous times (here, here, and here). It’s fought to prevent the abortion chain from being defunded while simultaneously fighting to ensure a massive influx of funding for its beloved ally (and annual convention sponsor) through Obamacare.”
Bomberger added that “Planned Parenthood, gay marriage, HIV/AIDS initiatives, and demonizing the GOP are far more important to the National Association for the Abortion of Colored People than the devastating reality that black babies are aborted at staggering levels.” He noted that black babies “are aborted six times more frequently (in NYC) than white babies: 1,448 are aborted for every 1,000 that are born alive as compared to 244 white babies aborted for every 1,000 born alive (all losses are a tragedy).”
He charged that the “National Association for the Abortion of Colored People has no moral ground to stand upon, just quick sand oozing with the blood of those most discriminated against. The NAACP’s covert and overt support of Planned Parenthood negates any other human rights they purport to defend.”
In a February 7 press release, Bomberger said that the frank commentary prompted an attorney representing the NAACP to send a letter accusing him of “trademark infringement” for the creative way in which Bomberger equated the NAACP with abortion. The attorney demanded that Bomberger and the Radiance Foundation cease calling his client the “National Association for the Abortion of Colored People,” threatening that the NAACP was prepared to take “the appropriate steps to stop your infringing activities and obtain appropriate damages.”
In response to the threat, Bomberger, who is black, filed his own lawsuit, with the help of the conservative Alliance Defending Freedom, arguing that his work is protected by the First Amendment and “fair use” laws.
“It is ironic that a black man is being sued by the nation’s oldest civil rights group for exercising his most basic civil right — the freedom of speech,” said Bomberger. “This threat of legal action from the NAACP is nothing more than a multi-million dollar organization’s attempt to bully someone who’s simply telling the truth.”
The black pro-life leader, who as a baby was adopted by white parents, has been a part of a number of high-profile campaigns taking a stand for the pre-born, including the website TooManyAborted.com, which Bomberger said was designed in part to “expose the eugenic racism that gave birth to Planned Parenthood and the tragic alliance that exists between the nation’s oldest civil rights group and the nation’s abortion giant.”
World Magazine noted that in 2004 the NAACP “came out in support of abortion-on-demand, with then-chairman Julian Bond (shown on left) saying the group was ‘pleased to join those insisting on a woman’s right to control her own body.’”
Bomberger recalled that Bond once spoke at a dinner for NARAL and “praised the fact that black women have high abortion rates. Sixty percent of viable black pregnancies are aborted in New York City, the home of NARAL and Planned Parenthood. Statistics show that more black babies are aborted in New York City than are born alive: 1,489 black babies are aborted for every 1,000 born alive.”
As for the threatened NAACP lawsuit, Bomberger said he has no intention of being silenced concerning the truth about the abortion holocaust in the black community, or the civil rights group’s involvement. “Our inner-cities are crumbling, two-parent married families barely exist, 72.3 percent of our children are born into homes without fathers,” he said, “and the NAACP wants to silence me for pointing out its support of abortion.”
