Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times in an assassination attempt at a government meeting in Handlová, Slovakia earlier today. According to a statement released, “An assassination [attempt] on Prime Minister Robert Fico was carried out today at the government’s off-site meeting in Handlova,”

In response to the assassination attempt on Fico, Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová stated on X:

Fico is described as a populist, and he opposed Covid-19 lockdowns in 2021. He has strongly opposed sending military aid to Ukraine, stating in a September 2023 speech:

Peace is the only solution. I refuse to get criticized and labeled as a warmonger just for talking about peace, whereas those who support war and killing are being called peace activists. We have it all messed up in our heads. We will not send a single bullet to Ukraine from the state stocks.
