The U.S. Department of Labor announced new overtime regulations for “low paid” salaried workers. According to the new rule, salaried workers who make less than $844 per week will be eligible for overtime starting on July 1, 2024. Employees who earn less than $1,128 per week will be eligible starting on January 1, 2025.

The Department of Labor announced the new regulations on X, stating:

A hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Our new rule will benefit millions of workers, including many who have been working 40+ hours/week without any extra pay, by ensuring they gain overtime protections or a raise in salary or compensation level. http://dol.gov/ot

In response to the announcement, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) criticized former President Donald Trump, and praised the Biden administration, stating on X:

As president, Donald Trump gutted the rules that required overtime pay for millions of workers. We applaud the Biden administration for finalizing its @USDOL rule to restore and extend overtime protections for hard-working Americans.
