David Horowitz has written a book documenting what is becoming increasingly obvious — a chief goal of the American Left is the elimination of American Christianity in American society.
Horowitz appeared on C-Span to promote his book Dark Agenda: The War to Destroy Christian America, and bluntly accused the progressive movement of subverting the history of America’s founding so as to promote their radical agenda.
“In the last 60 years, the anti-religious, anti-American left has conducted a relentless assault on believers and their beliefs, suppressing religious liberty, stripping the public square of religious expression and memory, and, in the process, removing the underpinnings of our democratic order,” Horowitz explained.
“What inspired me to write this book was the realization that the left’s hatred for Christianity is also its hatred for America itself,” he added.
As part of this desire to push religion, particularly Christianity, out of public discourse, there is an ongoing alteration of American history. Horowitz offered the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, which opened in 2008, as an example of this effort. The Center, built underground next to the Capitol Building, has exhibits purporting to show the history of the United States, a gift shop, and a food court.
No references to God are found in the Center, Horowitz noted, and historical references have been edited out. “All references to God and the religious faith of the founders had been systematically edited out of its photos and historical displays,” he recalled. “The lengths to which the designers went to expunge God from the visitors center and from the founding is remarkably petty and extreme.”
Horowitz told C-Span, “Over the signers in the actual Constitution, it says, ‘in the year of our Lord, 1787.’ They photoshopped it so there’s no ‘in the year of our Lord.’ Unbelievable, actually what they did.” Another example cited by Horowitz concerned the national motto of the United States. “The visitor center said that … our official motto is ‘E Pluribus Unum.’ No, it’s ‘In God We Trust.’ And they took a replica of the speaker’s roster, the Speaker of the House, which has the inscription, ‘In God We Trust,’ and they took it out.”
Horowitz’s family were American Communists, but he has become a conservative, even writing Radical Son — A Generational Odyssey in 1998 detailing his experiences. While Horowitz is an agnostic Jew, he argues in his newest book that it is the goal of the Left to displace belief in God and the Christian faith as part of its goal to build a socialist new world order.
According to Horowitz in Dark Agenda, Christian principles were foundational to the creation of the American republic. He charges that American progressives, from Margaret Sanger to Barack Obama, have all attempted to undermine traditional Christianity. (Who can forget Obama’s charge that Middle America was “clinging to their guns” and their religion?) Much like the visitor’s center mentioned by Horowitz, Obama has done some of his own deletions of the Christian foundations of Americanism. For example, when citing the Declaration of Independence, Obama said that we are endowed with certain inalienable rights, but he left out who Thomas Jefferson said endows us with those rights — our Creator.
Then, of course, there are the attacks upon Trump nominees for their Christian faith. Amy Comey Barrett, a judicial nominee, was taken to task by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) because Barrett believes the “dogma” of the Catholic Church. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) even refused to vote for a nominee as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget because the man believed Jesus Christ was the sole way for salvation.
Even Gary Johnson, the 2016 Libertarian Party presidential nominee, dismissed religious liberty as “a dark hole.”
Horowitz’s thesis is that this continuing assault upon traditional Christianity is driven by a desire to undermine the foundations of the Republic itself, and he castigates organizations such as the ACLU, which have led the way in the assault.
The attacks upon Christianity fit in with the continued smearing of the Founding Fathers and of historical personalities such as Christopher Columbus. Columbus’ desire to take the Christian gospel to the heathen of Asia is largely airbrushed out of history. As monuments continue to be defaced, and days honoring certain heroes continue to be changed, similar assaults on Christian personalities and institutions should come as no surprise.
