Following President Biden’s announcement that he is dropping out of the 2024 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris has received the support of a large number of the delegates needed to secure the Democratic nomination. The Associated Press reports that more than1,500 delegates have stated they plan to support Harris at the Democratic National Convention in August. Following his announcement, Biden endorsed Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee, stating on X:

My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) endorsed Harris, stating the Democrat party must unify and elect Harris, posting on X:

Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States. My enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris for President is official, personal and political…. In the Democratic Party, our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power. Now, we must unify and charge forward to resoundingly defeat Donald Trump and enthusiastically elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States. Onward to victory!

California Governor Gavin Newsom worked closely with Harris when she served as San Francisco’s district attorney during his two terms as Mayor of San Francisco. Newsom said no other candidate is better than Harris, stating on X:

Tough. Fearless. Tenacious. With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump’s dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America’s Vice President, @KamalaHarris

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) stated Harris was chosen by voters to succeed Biden in her endorsement, stating on X:

I endorse Kamala Harris for President. She is a proven fighter who has been a national leader in safeguarding consumers and protecting access to abortion. As a former prosecutor, she can press a forceful case against allowing Donald Trump to regain the White House. We have many talented people in our party, but Vice President Harris is the person who was chosen by the voters to succeed Joe Biden if needed. She can unite our party, take on Donald Trump, and win in November.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) also endorsed Harris, pledging her full support in a statement on X:

Kamala Harris will be the next President of the United States. I pledge my full support to ensure her victory in November. Now more than ever, it is crucial that our party and country swiftly unite to defeat Donald Trump and the threat to American democracy. Let’s get to work.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced his endorsement of Harris, and said he has worked closely with Harris throughout the Biden-Harris administration, stating on X:

Kamala Harris is now the right person to take up the torch, defeat Donald Trump, and succeed Joe Biden as President. I have seen her extraordinary leadership firsthand, working closely with her during the 2020 campaign and then in the historically effective Biden-Harris administration. I will do all that I can to help her win this election to lead America forward as our next President.
