Dr. Willie Wei-Hock Soon (shown) is an astrophysicist and geoscientist at the Solar and Stellar Physics (SSP) Division of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, as well as an astronomer at the Mount Wilson Observatory in southern California. He is a leading authority on the relationship between solar phenomena and global climate. He is also a receiving editor for the journal New Astronomy and has testified before Congress on the issue of climate change.
Dr. Soon is the author of The Maunder Minimum and the Variable Sun-Earth Connection (World Scientific Publishing Company, 2004). He is the coauthor, with Sebastian Lüning, of Chapter 2: “Solar Forcing of Climate,” in Climate Change Reconsidered II: Physical Science (The Heartland Institute, 2013), a comprehensive critique of the Working Group I contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Dr. Soon’s research has appeared many times in peer-reviewed journals, including: Climate Research; Progress in Physical Geography; Energy & Environment; Geophysical Research Letters; Ecological Complexity; International Journal of Forecasting; Science and Education, and others. His discoveries challenge computer modelers and advocates who consistently underestimate solar influences on cloud formation, ocean currents, and wind that cause climate to change. He is a leader among the many scientists who challenge the IPPC’s false claim that “the science is settled” regarding global warming, and that the “consensus” of science proclaims that manmade CO2 is responsible for dangerously warming our planet.
Dr. Soon earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science and his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California.
He was a speaker at the Heartland Institute’s 9th International Conference on Climate Change, a gathering of many of the world’s top climate scientists and researchers who challenge the IPCC’s increasingly discredited claim that human activity is causing a global crisis that demands draconian global regulations under an increasingly powerful United Nations. The conference took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, July 7-9, 2014. The lineup of distinguished speakers and panelists, with links to video recordings of their presentations can be viewed here.
Dr. Soon, who was interviewed by The New American at the Heartland Institute’s 2010 conference, graciously accepted our invitation for an on-the-spot Skype interview in between events on his busy schedule at this year’s Las Vegas conference.
