Did Biden Wreck His Campaign When He Told Voters Not To Vote for Him?

Lawrence O’Donnell, host of MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, asked Joe Biden last Thursday, “What do you say to women who were ready to vote for Joe Biden, eager to vote for Joe Biden, but this [sexual assault charge] gives them serious pause because they do believe Tara Reade.… what would you say to them about that?” Biden answered: “If they believe Tara Reade, the probably shouldn’t vote for me. I wouldn’t vote for me if I believed Tara Reade.”

Some feel that with that response, there’s a very good chance that Biden — the Democrat Party’s presumptive nominee for president — has torpedoed his nascent campaign.

The mathematics is irrefutable. Trump will receive most of the Republican votes and an increasingly large number of votes from independents. He will receive the votes from Democrats disenchanted with Biden. And that number is substantial and increasing.

A new Hill-HarrisX survey reveals that one-third of Democratic voters believe Reade’s claims, while half of all registered voters, regardless of party affiliation, believe her claims.

If those disenchanted Democratic voters listen to Biden and take his recommendation, the presidential race is over.

Weak and diminishing support for Biden is showing up in other places as well. When Rasmussen asked “Should Democrats find someone other than Biden to be their nominee?” 28 percent said yes and another 18 percent were undecided. That leaves a bare majority who said no, that they were happy keeping Biden as the presumptive nominee.

Democrat financial support for Biden is lagging as well. At the end of March, the Biden campaign had $103 million on hand compared to the $255 million in the bank for the Trump campaign.

Biden stumbled further on Friday by telling Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer — who is being sued for her egregious overreaching restrictions on her state’s citizens in response to the coronavirus — by telling her “I think you’ve done one hell of a job.”

Biden carries baggage from his past as well: It has just been revealed that he was directly involved in the unmasking of General Michael Flynn. He continues to suffer under the revelation that he threatened to withhold U.S. funds from Ukraine unless the prosecutor looking into his son’s involvement in the corrupt firm Burisma was fired.

And his son Hunter continues to plague the presumptive nominee. A week after Biden and his son flew to China in December 2013, Hunter — who, it will be remembered, has no background in private-equity investing, no background in Chinese finance, and none in energy development — received a $1.5 billion investment deal from the Chinese government. And this is to say nothing of the $80,000 monthly salary he received while serving as a non-working director of the energy company Burisma.

As The New American has reported, Biden’s perceived “lead” over Trump in various polls has all but evaporated.

Finally, Biden has nothing to offer except that he’s running against Trump. This simply won’t sit well with the average American voter. As Americans are generally optimistic about their futures, Biden has little to say. On the other hand, Trump is gaining in reputation as a great encourager, especially during the present crisis. His catch-phrase, “I restored the economy once before, I can do it again,” is likely to resonate positively compared to Biden’s prescription of more government, higher taxes, more gun control, and more regulations on business as the answer to all of America’s ills.
