Maryland Representative Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, claimed on the CBS Face the Nation program June 9 that at least one employee in the Cincinnati IRS office said that discrimination against conservatives wasn't initiated by White House influence. But Cummings' claim seems contrary to evidence available to the public.

The Obama administration's defense in the IRS scandal is falling apart. It is increasingly clear that targeting of conservatives was directed from Washington, as multiple IRS offices have now been shown to have been involved in such efforts.

IRS official Lois Lerner pled her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination at congressional hearings in the ever-widening IRS scandal May 22, as it became increasingly apparent that senior Obama administration officials knew the IRS was discriminating against conservative and Tea Party groups more than a year ago and did nothing to stop it.

Keynesian economist Paul Krugman crowed in the June 6 edition of the New York Review of Books that “the case for austerity has crumbled,” but careful analysts should be cautioning “real austerity was never even attempted.”
