George Washington warned Americans about entangling alliances with the Old World. Perhaps one reason is exemplified by last Friday's attack in Lahore, Pakistan, by Islamic extremists against a sect of Islam that rejects some tenets of the Islam practiced by most Musliims. The terrorists hit two mosques crowded with worshippers, killing scores of the minority sect.

Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada announced on December 8 that his nation was suspending talks with the United States regarding the status of American military bases in Japan. A particularly difficult issue is the American military presence at Okinawa. Japanese citizens on this island, which is part of the Ryukyu Islands on the southernmost part of the archipelago, have complained that American military personnel increase the crime rate and create environmental problems.

The sovereign debt crisis of the European Union is not going away anytime soon. The new Italian government has already had a crisis of confidence and a threatened general strike that has pushed the yield on Italian government bonds higher and led the new premier to ponder resignation.

At the time of now-Supreme Court Justice Kagan's Court confirmation hearings, Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans asked if she had "ever been asked about [her] opinion" or "offered any view or comments" concerning "the underlying legal or constitutional issued related to any proposed health care legislation, including but not limited to Pub. L. No. 111-148 [ObamaCare], or the underlying legal or constitutional issues related to potential litigation resulting from such legislation."  Kagan's answer was an unqualified "no."

The federal bench, more and more, determines the policy of federal and state government. So it is an indication of conflict over the direction of our nation that President Obama appointed Caitlin Halligan, who is General Council of the District Attorney’s Office in the City of New York, to the post of judge on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Republicans in the Senate, however, blocked that appointed by preventing cloture.

The Cato Institute has discovered a proposal by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to institute one of the most intrusive regulations yet in the food processing industry. This proposal, which was published for comments in the Federal Register on September 15, is laying the groundwork for setting federal targets for the reduction of salt levels in various foods.
