James Arness, the legendary actor known to several generations of TV viewers as Marshall Matt Dillon of Dodge City, Kansas, in the 20-year-long series Gunsmoke, died of heart failure on June 3 at his home in Los Angeles. Arness, who was born James King Aurness in Minneapolis in 1923, was 88 years old. His younger brother, actor Peter Graves, best known for his role on Mission: Impossible, and for his earlier role in the series, Fury, died last year.

A more elegant wielder of the pen than Joe Sobran was always hard to find. After devouring something he had written, most of his readers would summarize, “How nicely that was phrased,” or “I wish I could write like that.”

John William Finn, the last survivor of the 15 Navy veterans who received the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, died on May 27 at the Veterans Home of California in Chula Vista. Finn, who retired from the Navy in 1956 with the rank of Lieutenant, was 100 years old.

Former John Birch Society writer and speaker Alan Stang succumbed to cancer in his home state of Texas on July 19th. Stang was born and raised in New York City. Once a New York City taxicab driver and ballroom dance instructor, he was a graduate of City College of New York and Columbia University. He became a writer/producer for shows featuring television personality Mike Wallace.

More than a decade ago, when Rush Limbaugh was ascending to his version of heaven (the one where dollars flow his way), he also travelled the country giving speeches. In an appearance in Daytona Beach, he told his adoring public, "The reason I do what I do, the way I do it, is to get the largest radio audience possible to get the largest dollar amount I can for commercials.  It’s a business — strictly a business."

One of America’s most familiar voices fell silent on February 28. Legendary news commentator Paul Harvey died with family members at his side at a hospital near his winter home in Phoenix. There cannot be too many Americans who have never heard him introduce his program with “Stand by for news!” over six decades. He regularly supplied generally conservative and homespun commentaries that appealed to almost everyone.

Bob Adelmann

Bob Adelmann is a graduate of Cornell University with two degrees, including a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in economics and finance. Bob’s career path took him from insurance into estate planning, and then into investment and tax planning. After the stock market crash in October of 1987, Bob started his own investment management company that grew to over $15 million in less than 10 years. He then sold the company to his son in 1996 and now concentrates on writing for TNA.

Raven Clabough

Raven Clabough was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and is the oldest of five children. She acquired both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at the University of Albany in upstate New York. She currently lives in Pennsylvania and has been a writer for TNA since January 2010.

Thomas Eddlem

Thomas Eddlem has written for TNA for over a decade and has 20+ years of experience as a journalist. He graduated from Stonehill College with a Bachelors of Arts in political science and a minor in history. Larry Greenley

Larry Greenley was born in Independence, Iowa. He grew up in the Waterloo, Iowa, area then went on to college at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Humanities (philosophy) and Science (molecular biology). He went on to two years of graduate studies in philosophy and psychology at the University of Iowa. He also studied American and European history on the graduate level for many years as a part-time student at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Larry spent 24 years of his career in marketing and sales of scientific products for biological research labs. He joined the staff of The John Birch Society in 1996 as a field coordinator, then served as director of research from 2001 to 2004, director of marketing from 2004 to 2010, and is currently director of missions.

Ed Hiserodt

Regular contributor Ed Hiserodt graduated from the first aerospace engineering class at the University of Alabama. He is currently an aerospace engineer and the president of Controls & Power, Inc. John McManus not only serves as publisher for TNA, but also as the president of The John Birch Society (JBS). John earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Holy Cross College, followed by a commission in the United States Marine Corps. He served three years of active duty, after which he had a career as an electronics engineer before joining the JBS staff. John is the author of several books, including “Changing Commands: The Betrayal of America’s Military,” “Financial Terrorism: Hijacking America Under the Threat of Bankruptcy,” “William F. Buckley, Jr.: Pied Piper for the Establishment,” and “The Insiders.” He is also a frequent guest on talk shows on both radio and television.

Gary Benoit

Gary Benoit is the editor of The New American. Gary graduated magna cum laude in physics from the University of Lowell (now the University of Massachusetts — Lowell) in 1976 and joined the staff of The John Birch Society the following year. Over the years, he has held a number of positions with JBS including director of research prior to becoming editor of TNA.

William F. Jasper

William F. Jasper is the senior editor of TNA. William earned a bachelor’s degree in child psychology and education from the University of Idaho. He has a well-earned reputation as one of America’s top investigative reporters and has attended several international conferences hosted by the United Nations. He is most known for his work on the Oklahoma City bombing and its aftermath. William has also authored two books, “Global Tyranny … Step by Step” and “The United Nations Exposed.”

Kurt Williamsen

The associate editor of TNA, Kurt Williamsen is, by his own description, “a Jack of all trades, master of none.” He has worked as a lifeguard, dishwasher, landscaper, carpenter, roofer, concrete worker, shoe salesman, building products salesman, telemarketing rep, English teacher and now associate editor. He has undergraduate degrees in business administration/marketing and secondary English.

Warren Mass

Warren Mass is the web editor of TNA. Warren has worked for two major book publishers in New York City and for an entertainment industry newspaper in Los Angeles. He has written for the JBS Bulletin since 1975, Long Beach Island magazine (New Jersey) in the mid 1980s and The New American since 1986.

Joseph Kelly

Joe Kelly is the art director and production manager for The New American. Joe studied art and holds a degree in graphic design and visual communications from the Art Institute of Dallas. He is responsible for the layout, design and production of each magazine and helps with the overall look and feel of TheNewAmerican.com.

Katie Carder

Katie Carder is a graphic design intern for The New American. She is a native of Appleton, Wisconsin. Katie will be graduating in May of 2012 from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh with a Bachelor of Science degree with an art-graphic design emphasis and a religious studies minor. She has worked as an intern since mid 2011, mainly working on the magazine, but has also been involved in other projects for JBS.
