“Unless everybody does their part, many of the insurance reforms we seek, especially requiring insurance companies to cover preexisting conditions, just can't be achieved,” Obama told Congress in his recent address. “That’s why under my plan, individuals will be required to carry basic health insurance — just as most states require you to carry auto insurance.” Photo: AP Images

Ironic, isin't it? If you refuse to purchase health insurance, and refuse to pay the fine, you can be thrown into prison. And while in prison, you get... YUP! Free healthcare! |

President So you refuse to purchase health insurance & you have a heart attack & you end up in the ER. The ER has to treat you,it is the law, & then you don't pay. If you were taken to the county hospital the tax payers get to pay. If you were taken to a private hospital then the insurance companies get to pay, becuase the hospitals have to charge 300% more than they should. You are no different than a shop lifter, you are steeling form the system. |

Auto-like health insurance This is how it would work. You are a vice president and you go hunting. You accidentally shoot your buddy. Your insurance will pay for the medical help necessary to treat his injuries. This is the "liability" portion of the insurance. If you choose to carry "collision" and you shoot yourself in the foot, your insurance will pay, subject to a deductible. Same thing if you smoke and get lung cancer, "fool around" and get an STD, get drunk and fall off a bar stool, etc. "Comprehensive" would apply in the case of lung cancer from second hand smoke, congenital heart defects, and the general effects of life. The only mandatory part of this health insurance is the "liability" component. |

... I just have a forboding for anything that smells of dictatorship. I don't have health insurance and have never been able to afford it unless it was provided by an employer and now I have been unemployed since Dec. 2008. |

what can they do if you don't by insurance? I have heard (obviously not from Obama or from a bill as we are all too stupid to read the bills thus they don't post them) they can garnish their wages, gov't checks, savings, checking, cds, retirement accts, take your boat, house, car, motorcycles whatever you have. And if all else fails you will face imprisonment for breaking federal law. So seniors make friends with your local drug dealer you may need him on your side. Sounds stupid?? no stupider than forcing us to buy insurance. You don't buy car insurance for yourself, you buy in most cases to protect someone you may hit. |

As President Obama and Democrats in Congress try to build a case for requiring all Americans to purchase health insurance, they have compared it to mandatory auto insurance laws — but the analogy quickly breaks down.
