John F. McManus
John F. McManus is president of the John Birch Society and publisher of The New American magazine. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Mr. McManus earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Holy Cross College along with a commission in the United States Marine Corps. He served three years of active duty as an electronics engineer. During that time he won an award from the Air Force for designing a component used in fighter aircraft. Mr. McManus accepted a full-time position with the John Birch Society in 1966, working closely Robert Welch, the founder of the organization. Mr. McManus is the author of several books, including Changing Commands: The Betrayal of America’s Military; Financial Terrorism: Hijacking America Under the Threat of Bankruptcy; William F. Buckley, Jr.: Pied Piper for the Establishment; and The Insiders. An engaging and popular speaker, Mr. McManus is a frequent guest on talk shows on both radio and television. He resides with his wife, Mary, in Wakefield, Massachusetts.
Gary Benoit
Gary Benoit is editor of The New American magazine, a position he has held, with the exception of two years only, since 1986. Mr. Benoit graduated magna cum laude in physics from the University of Lowell (now the University of Massachusetts) and began his career working in the field of nuclear energy. Not long after graduation, however, Mr. Benoit changed careers, joining the staff of the John Birch Society. In his tenure with the Society, he has held a number of positions, including eastern manager of the Society’s Speakers Bureau, director of the Society’s Research Department and national director of the Society’s tax reform program. Mr. Benoit is a regular speaker at Youth Meets Truth summer camps for teenagers where he lectures on civics and Americanism.
William F. Jasper
William F. Jasper is Senior Editor for The New American magazine. A tireless researcher and investigator with high-level official contacts around the world, Mr. Jasper has a well-earned reputation as one of America’s top investigative reporters. Before embarking on a career in journalism, he earned bachelor’s degrees in child psychology and education from the University of Idaho, after which he worked as a teacher in both public and private schools. Since then, as a member of the press corps, he has attended several international conferences hosted by the United Nations and his ground-breaking reporting on the Oklahoma City bombing and its aftermath for The New American magazine did much to underscore the threat of terrorism years before 9/11. Mr. Jasper is also the author of the books Global Tyranny … Step by Step and The United Nations Exposed.
Kurt Williamsen
Kurt Williamsen is Associate Editor of The New American magazine. He is, by his own admission, what one would deem “a jack of all trades and master of none.” He has worked as a lifeguard, dishwasher, landscaper, carpenter, roofer, concrete worker, shoe salesman, building products salesman, telemarketing rep, English teacher, and, now associate editor. He has undergraduate degrees in Business Administration/Marketing and Secondary English. To him, a worthwhile life means spending time with God, family, and friends — especially when one can spend time with them either fishing or hunting.
Joseph W. Kelley
Joseph W. Kelley is Art Director and Production Manager for The New American magazine. As an undergraduate, Mr. Kelley studied art and holds a degree in graphic design and visual communications from the Art Institute of Dallas. Before joining the staff of the magazine, Mr. Kelley served 7 years in the U.S. Army at postings both in Europe and the U.S., where he worked with the border patrol to stop drug smugglers near the U.S./Mexican border. He is a print design specialist whose graphic design and artwork is focused on developing visually appealing and marketable layouts and designs for print publications. In addition to designing each magazine layout, Mr. Kelly also provides advertising design and layout for that ads that appear in The New American.
Steven J. DuBord
Steven J. DuBord is the Desktop Publishing Specialist for The New American magazine. Mr. DuBord has studied topics ranging from computer programming to theology, but his primary interest has always been the personal computer, specifically the Apple Macintosh. He first turned his hobby into a career while working at a financial institution for almost five years. He then gained employment with The New American magazine, where he recently celebrated his 16th anniversary as a staff member. Over the years, Mr. DuBord’s work on The New American has grown from computerized typesetting and technical support to making editorial contributions and writing several articles. When not basking in the glow of a computer screen, he can be found reading, involved with church activities, or spending time with family members and friends.
Brian T. Farmer
Brian T. Farmer is a Research Associate with the John Birch Society and The New American magazine. As an undergraduate, Mr. Farmer attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he focused his studies on geology and German and graduated with honors. Mr. Farmer went on to earn a Master's degree from the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona, where his studies centered on international trade and economics, finance, and money and banking. After working as a credit analyst in the international division of Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company in New York City, he accepted an offer of employment at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he spent sixteen years working in the finance and procurement departments. During that period of time, he took advantage of the opportunity to travel extensively, making fifteen round-the-world excursions, and visiting dozens of countries. In addition to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Farmer has also resided in Germany and Japan. In Tokyo, he met Mariko Furukawa, and they have been married since 2001. 2001 was also the year that he joined the research department of The John Birch Society. In addition to his research duties, he is a frequent contributor The New American, to the JBS News Feed and to other media outlets.
Bonnie Gillis
Bonnie Gillis is a Research Associate with the John Birch Society and The New American magazine. Ms. Gillis studied art at the University of Wisconsin and works primarily as an archivist and librarian, preserving and maintaining an inventory of almost 50 years of books, papers, manuscripts, film and memorabilia related to the post-war conservative and libertarian movement.
Larry Greenley
Larry Greenley is Director of Marketing for The New American magazine. Mr. Greenley is a 1964 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he received a B.S. degree in Humanities (philosophy) and Science (molecular biology). After two years of graduate studies in philosophy and psychology at the University of Iowa, Larry started his career as a science and math teacher in a public school in southwest Iowa. He also continued graduate studies in American and European history for many years as a part-time student at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Outside of academe, Larry spent 24 years of his career in the marketing and sales of scientific products for biological research labs. He joined the staff of the John Birch Society in 1996, and first served as a field staff Coordinator, then a Major Coordinator, followed by a position as the Director of Research. Although Larry lived most of his adult life in Northern Virginia near Washington, D.C., for the past nine years he and his wife Rosalie have resided in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Bill Hahn
Bill Hahn is Public Relations Manager for The New American magazine. Born and raised on one of the largest independent cranberry marshes in the state of Wisconsin, Mr. Hahn earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and gained valuable experience working in the public relations and marketing fields. He has more than 12 years of professional PR and marketing experience originating from the construction industry, as well as in the book and magazine publishing industry.
Julie DuFrane
Julie DuFrane is Advertising and Circulation Manager for The New American magazine. As an undergraduate, Mrs. DuFrane studied education. Before finishing her degree, she moved to Costa Rica where she taught English as a second language to students of all ages. Before returning to the U.S., Mrs. DuFrane served as Language Programs Coordinator at the Forester International Institute. She joined the staff of The New American magazine and the John Birch Society in 1989 and has served in a variety of positions, including Office Services Manager and Customer Service Manager.
